I found this artist on that's nice that. I really like his bold use of colour and lions work, I think it looks really effective with the medium (pencil crayon?) he has used.

Study Task 4: What is Illustration? - Part 2

Part 1
Its Nice That

I feel that this website is useful to me as an aspiring illustrator because of how it establishes the trends of contemporary Illustration. From looking at the Illustration archive, it outlines current issues that Illustrator's are focusing on, e.g the Charlie Hebdo attack in Paris, and methods and techniques in illustration that are new and up and coming. Aswell as Illustration, the website provides examples from every platform, from Photography to 3D product design, which allows me to take inspiration from every aspect of the Art Industry.

One article I found particularly interesting focused on 'Sam Lyon's amazing Jelly Gummies GIF's'. This article really opened my eyes as to what Illustration can entail, and how techniques are developing as technology evolves. This article is a good example of how diverse and crazy Illustration can be, which I personally, would not have come across without this website. Another useful aspect of this website is how it highlights inspiration and thought processes of the artist, which is really useful in terms of developing your own artwork. For example, the inspiration behind the Jelly Gummies is clearly shown on Lyon's blog, where he has personally collected images and videos.
As I, as an Illustration student, am slightly unsure of what type of artwork to make, I feel this website is really useful in terms of showcasing what is possible, and the routes you can go down as an artist.

Personal Reflections

Product

Greetings Cards: I really love the idea of greetings cards, because of their soul purpose of conveying a message. Illustrated cards are interesting because they not only convey a message, but also convey the artists 'tone of voice' in the way that the message is conveyed. I'm more of a fan of funny greetings cards myself as I feel that I can engage with them more easily, however simple images/patterns on cards can often be effective.

Publications

Leaflets/Fliers: I think that to create a successful flier/leaflet it has to catch your audience's attention instantly and convey meaning, which is something that, as an illustrator, I aspire to do successfully. I really enjoy collecting illustrated fliers, because I like the way that something so small and insignificant can be a really effective pieces of art work. I'd say they are also an effective way of getting your work into the world and something I would like to create in the future, branded or otherwise.

Places

Illustration Fairs: Illustration fairs are really inspirational places for me, because of the way that you can see how illustration is being used in an industry based environment. Their are often alot of artists their also trying to promote themselves which are happy to talk about their work, allowing me to get a first hand insight into the illustration industry from a practitioners point of view. From talking to Kristyna Baczynski, I learnt that illustration fairs are a great way to meet other artists who you can later collaborate with or just help each other out in terms of promotion.

Online

Instagram: I feel that Instagram and similar sites like it are really important to a creative practitioner in terms of getting your work out there. In this age where mobile phones do not leave peoples hands, it is an excellent way to engage with people almost instantly. As well as posting work, it is a great way for me to see work and gain inspiration, often with a personal comment from the artist. In the past I have spoken to artists on Instagram asking about their techniques, medias etc, and feel that this app is an easy way to engage with artists and aid my own practice.

Drew Millward

I recently went to a talk by Drew Millward, a leeds based illustrator who designed the artwork for Leeds International Beer Fest. I am a huge fan of Drew's work and find it amazing to look at, because of the sheer amount of detail in each piece he creates. I like the grungey, dripping effect seen in alot of his work also.

Llewmejia - Instagram

I have always been a fan of Llew Mejia's surface designs and illustrations. I really love his unique colour schemes and his methods of creating texture.
