1. What learning have you inherited through
this module and how has it impacted on your own understanding of professional
practice? Consider yourself as a student at University as much as an
illustrator
|
This module has been so
useful in terms of driving my practice forward. It has motivated me to look
into existing artists and really reflect on my intentions and aims for the
remaining of the course. Through this module I have really sculpted an idea
of what I want my work to look like, gaining inspiration from a variety of
contextual sources. It has helped me to capitalise on my strengths and
reflect on why sometimes things didn’t go completely to plan, and most
importantly think about what I want to get out of the course, and set up
goals in order to achieve it. Another thing I have thought about during PPP,
is how I would market myself as an artist, especially in the Advert task.
Although I took it quite light heartedly, I feel like I managed to convey
humour and a sense of playfulness in my work, which when eventually coming
down to it is how I would sell/show my work, something that I am thinking
about investigating over summer.
|
2. What approaches/ types of
research have you found most valuable over this module?
Why did they have such an
impact?
Throughout this module I have
gained a lot of inspiration from social media sites such as Instagram and
Tumblr, which I discovered during Study Task 4 where we were asked to create
a number of lists of where we could find Illustration. Although I found the
task quite simple, it was very beneficial in terms of just getting ideas down.
I also learnt about pinterest for the first time in study task 3 which is now
my go to source for inspiration when starting a project.

|
3. In what way has PPP
informed the way your work in other modules and your illustration practice as
a whole?
The main way that PPP has
informed my work would definitely be through contextual research. With
knowledge of existing sites such AOI, pinterest and other various publication
websites, I have been able to explore in depth artists that create the kind
of work that I feel inspired by. In relation to my practice as a whole, I
haven’t really explored illustration outside of modules, which is something I
am definitely starting to work on, beginning with personal sketchbooks. In
other parts such as Big Heads, I have learnt so much about existing artists
and noticed patterns as to what contributes to your success as an
illustrator, for example collecting small items/treasures that you can gain
inspiration from, something I never would have thought about.

|
|
4. What weaknesses can you
identify in your PPP submission and how will you address this in the future?
|
The main weakness I can
identify is perhaps my lack of research and depth when blogging. When
recording artists on my blog I haven’t really spoke about them in a lot of
depth, mainly because of the way that I use my PPP blog to merely look back
for inspiration. To work on this I intend to add to my PPP blog daily, which would be really straight
forward, especially when I have signed up to things like It’s Nice That
newsletter, that provides me with daily inspiration anyway. The next year
will really be about utilising things like newsletters and websites to help
shape my practice further. I am really looking forward to a fresh start in
level 5, especially now that I know I will be able to bog consistently, for
all aspects of the course.
5. What communities of
practice and professional contexts do you intend to investigate further as
you approach level 5? Why do they appeal to you?
Something that I have been thinking
a lot about lately is making a zine or maybe a book, based on my experience
in Visual Narratives, and how much I enjoyed creating it. I really loved the
feeling of investing a large amount of time into an end product like a book,
as opposed to posters and postcards. I feel like I am really starting to get
a taste of what kind of illustration I want to produce and enjoy creating,
which I am so grateful for. I intend to start investigating using shape and
texture so much deeper as I really enjoy the tone of voice/aesthetic it
creates. I have mainly discovered this through PPP tasks, looking at artists
like Michael Driver, Tom Cole and Brian Edward Miller, who’s work all fall
into the category of digital and analogue media combined, something that I am
currently really interested in.

OUIL402 - End Of Module Evaluation
Level 4 - Overall Thoughts
This year has been really beneficial for me as a student, and someone wanting to practice illustration. I feel throughout the modules, I have been really versatile, experimenting in a massive range of styles and medias, really trying to figure out what kind of work I want to make. At the start of the year, my main reoccurring criticism was that I wasn't investing enough of myself into my work, which looking back I can see very clearly. I think that my ever-improving time management skills has aided this a lot, as I am putting aside a lot more time for work, which regrettably I did not.
After this year I feel that I have developed so much, since before I started the course. I have gained a greater understanding of what Illustration actually is (with help from PPP), and started to surround myself with it a lot more. Initially I was a bit concerned as to the suitability of this course for my personal progression, however right now I can happily say that I am rapidly gaining a passion for Illustration which I hope is shown through my recent submissions.

PPP Presentation Preparation
Notes considering content of presentation
In my presentation, I intend to reflect on how I have developed over the course of this year. In my tutorial it was discussed how I have been very versatile in terms of trying alot of different things. As opposed to other people in my class who have stuck to a similar thing, I have continuously experimented with styles, media and tone of voice, which I feel has really helped my practice grow. At the moment I have an idea of what I want my work to look like, and I will continue to push this.
I would also like to discuss my strengths, my favorite briefs(?), mistakes I've made that I have learnt from, and how I my attitude is developing to be more professional in relation to my icons.
Presentation Slides
Intro
Before starting the course, why I chose this course, What I understood of Illustration (completely different to what I think now)
My year in images. Diverse, huge range of styles, very experimental. Feel like I have a stronger practice now because of it.
My favourite outcomes, all quite recent reflecting how I'm beginning to enjoy my work.
This brief was a turning point. In terms of discovering artists, trying new medias and just demonstrating over all passion for illustration that I haven't really shown before.
Critical moment, know now that I can't do humor.
Got my shit together, talk with matt.
Look how organised I am now. Finding a way to balance workload and social life with calendar. Although the course is very important to me, i think its neccessary to reflect on the whole student experience and how I've made some great friends and memories and I am really enjoying my time in Leeds.
The outcomes, media, struggles, why I decided to focus on these aspects.
Future plans, what I'm excited for in second year, summer plans.
Illustrated Self: Final Outcome
This is my final outcome for the module in the form of a poster. Originally I was going to use them for the slides in my presentation, however I did not feel this was necessary. Overall I'm pleased with this outcome, I think that the colours are all very complimentary yet still contrasting, aiding the communication process and the idea of icons communicating on various scales. I love the minute details, e.g the hand drawn elements, that give the piece a slight decorative feel and authenticity.
In terms of design, I think the poster looks quite quirky with the use of circles. It really irritates me how I wasn't able to get the text to wrap perfectly around the inside of the circle, however it doesn't hinder the piece too much.

Time Management
Push Ideas further Practice
Use sketchbook as a tool Balance social life and work load
- Colours are much better, really helps the composition.
- So much better in terms of communicating aswell.
- Nice use of texture.
I'm quite pleased with how my icons have turned out, as I have been able to maintain a bit of authenticity, as opposed to creating generic vector based images. I really like the colours, and think that the use of orange is really complimentary yet contrasting.
Illustrated Self: Development Work
After the tutorial, I opened up my sketchbook again and began stripping back my ideas to the essential aspects needed in order to communicate and work as icons.
Because of the nature of icons and how I was going to create them digitally (how generic can you get), I still wanted to inject some of my personality and tone of voice into it. To do so, I want my icons to look really authentic and twee, using shape and texture.
Illustrated Self: Initial Thoughts + Tutorial
To start this brief I made lists of ideas that would reflect my personal progress, and experiences on the course this year. One thing that I feel could really sum up my year, is how my attitude has changed, and how i've become more of a professional minded student as opposed to how I started the year. I am really happy with how the course is going at the moment, as I'm really starting to enjoy the work im making. I've become so much more passionate about illustration, which I feel has grown along with my understanding of what illustration is, and I'm really excited for the challenges that await in second year.
Based around the idea of being more professional, I used my sketchbook to do some speculative drawing, which actually really helped. Usually I am unable to keep a fully working sketchbook, however this one really helped me through, another way this year has helped me to develop.

Sketchbook pages
Based on my roughs and sketchbook drawings, I used the cintiq again (guilty) to start creating an idea of what my outcomes might look like. I had an idea of using circle frames and making almost icon-like images.
"Exhaust your ideas, Manage your time, Get some sleep"
I really like the limited colour palette and the subtle textures in the pieces. However, in terms of communication I don't think they are effective and could be quite confusing.
~
Tutorial Comments
- Images don't work well as icons. Look into illustrative icons.
- Don't let your cleverness get in the way of communication! (stop showing off)
- Icons need to work on a large and small scale, consider how you will communicate effectively.
- Use sketchbook more before jumping straight on the computer. Sketchbook so far is good, nice pencil work.

Time Management
As it is getting to that time of the year where time management is crucial, I decided to make a calendar to help me organise myself. Aswell as uni work, I have also started working and so it is really important to manage my time around that also.
Current inspirations
Recently I feel that I have really been able to capitalise on some of my personal successes in terms of media and creating a tone of voice for myself. I feel that my passion for illustration has become so much greater than what it originally was, and I find myself researching existing illustrators using social media, newsletters etc. I have found a number of existing artists that I feel really reflect my intentions and create the kind of work I enjoy making.
Tom Cole
Cole is an illustrator who I feel conveys mood and atmosphere incredibly well in his work. His textural approach to making pictures really gives them a quaint and often heart warming feel. Though I am unsure of his method of production, I really admire what appears to be a mixture of analogue and digital media and I think the contrast between the 2 is really complimentary, and something that is actually quite trendy right now in the illustration scene.
Michael Driver
An illustration graduate who I have followed on Instagram for quite some time. I love his mixture of digital and analogue media to create subtle textures which make his work really charming. I love how experimental he is with proportions and figure, and think that this piece in particularly uses this to create a unique and interesting composition.
Brian Edward Miller
This guy is insane and I love his colour schemes and everything pretty much.
